How to Paint Furniture You Buy At Consignment Shops…Continued

Now that you have sanded and primed your item, the next step is to apply the exterior paint color you have chosen.  I have found that the small sponge rollers work the best.  You will probably still need a small brush for the more intricate areas where the roller can’t reach.  The trick to a professional finish is to take your time and don’t apply the paint too thick.  It is best to apply two layers rather than one thick one.

There are several looks that have become popular over the past few years.  However, one in particular is very popular, and that is the distressed look.  The way to achieve this look is super easy.  Once the paint is completely dry you start to rub the edges, corners and even the surface using the fine sandpaper used earlier in the process.  Be careful not to overdo it, you want it to look a little worn but not like something that belongs at the curb.  Finally, if you feel the piece will be getting a lot of use you can seal the surface with a clear coat.  The sheen (flat, satin, glossy) will depend on the look you are trying to achieve.

Turning your furniture items from drab to fab is simple, don’t you agree?  The next time you are shopping in your favorite consignment store or thrift shop keep an open mind and think paint!

See you in the store soon!
