“Why so much”? This is a question I hear regularly. When shopping consignment stores it is important to educate yourself on what makes an item better than another. Let’s explore and scratch the surface of the difference between middle and high-end furniture.
Here is a listing of some of some high-end manufacturers of furniture: E J Victor, Henredon, Heritage, Southwood, Taylor King, Bradington Young, Hancock & Moore, Hickory White, Hickory Chair, Century and Baker.
Here is a listing of some of the middle: Clayton Marcus, Temple, Jetton, Massoud, Key City, Thomasville, Highland House, Drexel, C R Laine, Michael Thomas, Harden, Ethan Allen, Pa House, Sam Moore, Fairfield, Woodmark, Dixie, Lexington and Broyhill. And there are many more.
I recently had two Century upholstered chairs with a coordinating ottoman. These chairs originally sold for around $2100.00 each and the ottoman was easily around $800.00. I sold the chairs for $460.00 each and $180.00 for the ottoman. Most people were not familiar with Century, therefore didn’t know what an awesome deal that was. That was the deal of the ”Century” pun intended. However, I did have one customer who didn’t balk at the higher price because she realized that she would be paying a quarter of what they were worth originally.
So, you may be saying what’s the difference? What separates high-end and middle quality? Materials, craftmanship, quality and scale. If you want to see the best made sofa brand on the market, look at E J Victor. This is incredible stuff. Of course, it has a price tag to match, but is definitely a label to look for in consignment stores.
In my next blog I will get into the specific differences in middle to high-end furniture.
See you in the store soon!
